freerangefiddlerRune (no last name) is a 17 year old fiddler, who comes from a fantasy world called Alanda (and the mind of Mercedes Lackey) that is filled with magical creatures. It is similar to Velgarth in that it has sentient large birds, harpers, elves, you name it. It does not have Herald Mages, but I am willing to say that she is from the Empire, and not Valdemar if anyone wants to write a Fantasy scenario involving Mages and companions.
In the book she comes from, Rune is starting to find that her music, when played with heart's intent, can have an effect on her human and inhuman listeners. While playing, she can create the feelings of joy, sorrow, peace and love, riling up a crowd or calming one, or causing certain individuals to be open to other suggestions. In time, she'll learn to heal as well.
The character of Rune is taken from the Mercedes Lackey book 'The Lark and the Wren', and her point is about midway though the book, right about the time she begins her travels to the Midsummer Faire in Kingsford. She is a music student of Tonno, who is the owner of a used book and musical instrument store; and she works as a musician at Amber's, a pleasure house in Nolton.
Rune is self-sufficient, can find her way through and camp alone in a forest, knows some plant identification (at least which ones to eat raw and which ones to cook so they won't kill you) and is used to hard work, having grown up in a tavern with a horse barn/stalls that she helps clean and maintain. She is thin, quick moving and occasionally skips meals from lack of funds. She busks for money during the day on open-market corners, while wearing well patched and brightly (second hand) colored shirts with various ribbons attached at the shoulders and sewn onto the cuffs. Her trousers are wool, sometimes suede (depending on the season), and have patches at the knees, and ribbons down the side - and are a little long for her. She has fiddle, and lute, and can sing passably well.
She's pretty common sense (she does work in a pleasure house as a musician after all) however she can get lost in her own music on occasion and play until long after her fingers start to ache, lost in the music she weaves around her. She's cautious with strangers, but not unkind; and still retains some of that youthful optimism things will turn out for the good in the end.
